Optimizing for Legacy Environments: Migration from Next.js to CodeIgniter 4 & Multi-API Integration

This project involved rebuilding a system originally developed with Next.js and local LLMs using CodeIgniter 4 (PHP 8.x) to ensure stable operation in shared hosting environments. We overhauled the architecture from a high-resource requirement setup to a lightweight, high-speed model powered by external API integrations. The result is a data management environment that balances academic precision with practical utility.

1. Automatic Data Completion via Multi-faceted API Integration

To guarantee the accuracy of academic information, we implemented automated taxonomic data retrieval through the “GBIF API.” Furthermore, we constructed advanced logic that combines the “Google Maps API” and “Open-Elevation API” to automatically populate collection site addresses, coordinates, and altitudes directly from photo Exif data in a one-stop process.

2. Architecture Optimized for Shared Hosting Environments

By adopting CodeIgniter 4, we maximized the performance of PHP 8.x. We optimized the system for seamless deployment from Docker-based development to shared hosting, ensuring high stability and rapid response times even within low-cost infrastructure constraints.

3. Frontend Exif Analysis and Geolocation

Leveraging “Exif.js,” the system analyzes photo geotags on the client side. We developed a UI that immediately maps these coordinates onto “Google Maps,” allowing for intuitive verification and adjustment of location data. We also integrated the Wikipedia API to fetch descriptive information automatically.

4. Academic Label Generation and Data Structuring

Based on the accumulated data, the system automatically generates museum-standard collection labels in PDF and image formats. Through complex relational database design, we ensured high-speed filtering and reusability by family or year, even for specimen databases exceeding thousands of records.
